Public Events with Doan Bui (April 2025)

Poster for event with Doan Bui with the French Department at the University of California, Berkeley

I am delighted to participate in a couple public events with French-Vietnamese writer and journalist Doan Bui in the Bay Area while she is in California for the Villa Albertine artist residency. Come one, come all, in-person or virtually!

Sunday, April 6, 7:00 pmCity Lights Bookstore, San Francisco

I will be joining a conversation with Doan Bui and Peter Maravelis (City Lights) about her literary work and her research project with Villa Albertine on islands, spaces of exile, migration, and memory, all inspired by Perec.

Tuesday, April 8, 5:00 pmLibrary of French Thought, UC Berkeley

I have the pleasure of inviting Doan Bui for a reading and conversation with Professor Karl Britto (Associate Professor of French & Comparative Literature, Associate Dean, Arts & Humanities) and yours truly. She will be reading an excerpt from La Tour (Grasset 2022), translated by Ly Lan Dill and forthcoming in McSweeney’s 78: The Make Believers, as well as an excerpt that I have translated from Le Silence de mon père (L’Iconoclaste 2016). We will be be talking about language and its limits, form, shame, and the presence of the personal across her more recent novelistic endeavors. Poster below:
